Los Angeles dollmaker Sasha rediscovered her love of dolls when she decided to create one of her childhood treasures in the form of a "dancing doll" for her niece's eighth birthday. This led to a desire to make more sophisticated cloth dolls, based on paintings by Picasso and Matisse, which inspired faces with more elaborate embroidery.
Sasha's doll "Margot" is based on a 1904 Picasso painting by that name. The pointed boots, petticoats and colorful dresses of many of the dolls are inspired by Toulouse LaTrec's posters of dancers at the Moulin Rouge and from the "Can Can" from Jacques Offenbach's "Orpheus in the Underworld." Other inspirations have been Strauss waltzes and Giacometti's statues especially, the "Walking Man." One of the few male dolls so far, Andre, is based (no pun intended) on Los Angeles Dodger rightfielder, Andre Ethier.
In addition to making dolls, Sasha is teaching her niece and daughter to make dolls. Her goal is to make dolls that are good for the environment and fun to make and to be inspired by the art that is everywhere.
